Non-Destructive Testing

Methods & Peculiarities

Method Advantages Limitations
UT
(Ultrasonic Testing)

  • Easy for detecting planar discontinuities.
  • The test is applicable from one side of the object.
  • Information about the flaw’s height and its spread along the thickness direction of the wall can be got.
  • The test provides rapid test results.
  • Discontinuities in thick plates are detectable.

  • Surface condition is affected to test results.
  • Coupling medium must be applied on surface of subjects for testing.
  • Unsuitable for flaw detection in thin plates.
  • Difficult to evaluate the type of discontinuities.
  • Skilled technician is required to conduct testing.
MT
(Magnetic Testing)

  • Cost-effective, compared to other methods.
  • Easy for handling with portable devices.
  • Subsurface discontinuities can be also detected.

  • Limited to ferromagnetic materials.
  • Cleaning is necessary before and after the testing.
  • Coated test objects are not applicable.
  • Power supply is required.
PT
(Penetrant Testing)

  • Easy to apply in field testing when used portable set.
  • Cost-effective
  • Easy to evaluate the test results.
  • No electric power is required, except for the lighting.
  • Discontinuities in any shape or direction are detectable.

  • Required to remove the coating and foreign materials inside a flaw completely before testing.
  • Cleaning is necessary before and after the testing.
  • Need to be careful of over-cleaning or insufficient cleaning after penetration.
ET
(Eddy Current Testing)

  • High speed test is available.
  • Performance is suitable for automation.
  • Discontinuities are detectable without direct contact with the test material.

  • Irrelevant signals and noise disturb evaluations.
  • Evaluation of the type, shape and length of discontinuities is difficult.

Details

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Normal (Straight Beam) Method for Flaw Detection

This is a method to send ultrasounds to the tested surface and receive the signal of subject flaws by a normal transducer positioned perpendicular.
Ex) Tests for Tie Rod, Cylinder-Cover Bolt, Cylinder Crown etc.

Normal (Straight Beam) Method for Thickness Measurement
(Straight Beam Method for Flaw Detection)

Local corrosion occurred on opposite side can be located and the remained wall thickness can be read by continuous searching.
Inside pitting corrosion can be detected without removal of pipes and it contributes significantly to prevent leakage.
Ex) For detection of pitting corrosion and erosion on big size pipes, such as Cargo Line Pipe, Ballast Pipe, Sea Water Pipe etc., and on small tubes installed in Boiler for locating of local corrosion on tank’s bottom under Bell Mouth.

IRIS(Internal Rotary Inspection System)

Ultrasonic transductor inserted into a tube can read the 360 degree wall thickness via a rotating mirror attached to water turbine.
Sectional drawing for corroded area and longitudinal location of such corrosion can be got visibly on CRT by drawing signal dots in order to rotation direction.
Ex) Applied to Super Heater Tubes for Boilers.

Thickness Measurement of Tubes by Manual Immersion Method (IMS)

IMS method is also available for thickness measurement of tubes.
Ex) Applied to various boiler tubes, economizer tubes, feed water heater tubes etc.

Angle Beam Method for Flaw Detection

Inspection by transmitting and receiving ultrasounds at an angle into full-penetration welds, such as butt weld seams.
Applied to LNG Cargo Tanks (Equator Welding), renewed areas of Shell Plate etc.

Magnetic Testing (MT)

Inspection using magnetism.
Discontinuities are detected by magnetizing the test object (a ferromagnetic material) and visualizing the magnetic flux leakage caused by discontinuities using magnetic powder.
Ex) Applied to maintenance inspection for LPG Pressure Tank.

Penetrant Testing (PT)

Inspection using capillary action.
Discontinuities are checked by absorbing the penetrant that has seeped into the discontinuities with a developer solution.
Applied to SUS Tank for Chemical Tanker, LNG Cargo Tank (AL), Liquid Line (SUS) etc.

Eddy Current Testing (ET)

Inspection using changes in eddy current occurred by electromagnetic induction.
Wastage is grasped by changes in eddy current which is detected by inserting an internal probe and moving it at high speed.
Applied to cooling tubes of Heat Exchanger.

Video Scope (Endoscope Inspection)

We have extensive experiences with boiler tubes.

Ship Survey

Pre-dock Survey

In order to conduct dock work efficiently, we carry out a survey before the vessel enters into a dockyard and prepare appropriate reports.
Extensive experiences on vessels such as VLCC, LNG Carrier, LPG Carrier, Bulk Carrier, Ore Carrier, Chemical Carrier, Chip Carrier etc.
・Carry out surveys on a voyage
・Carry out surveys at loading and unloading ports
・Carry out surveys using a raft (rubber boat) for omitting setup of scaffolding
・Carry out pre-dock surveys for CAP Survey to estimate the amount of steel works

Inspection on Stainless Steel Materials

We carry out inspections of condition of the stainless steel surface.
Ex) Evaluation of stains and pits in stainless steel cargo tanks during a docking.

Tightness Testing of Hatches

For the sake of preventing cargo damages caused by water invasion, a tightness testing of hatches with ultrasonic equipment is effective.

Close-up Survey and Thickness Measurement by using Remote Inspection Techniques (Drones)

For surveys at high-place or danger place, scaffolding and cherry picker are usually taken as means of access. Late years, a survey by using drones is getting remarked, as an alternative means. Sanki Marine Service Inc. is certified by NK and ABS as a service supplier engaged in Close-up Survey using Remote Inspection Techniques (Drones), and is also certified by NK as a service supplier engaged in thickness measurement using Remote Inspection Techniques (Drones) as well. We are providing the services for surveys and thickness measurement according to the Class requirements, and also for checking the condition of hull structures as per ship’s owner’s requirements.
